Frequently Asked Questions about Septic Systems
How do I get my land “perked”?
First of all, we no longer do “perk” tests. We evaluate sites through soil evaluations by the studying of soil characteristics such as the soils structure, soil texture, mineralogy, soil depth, and the presence of wetness conditions in the soil. All of these characteristics play a vital role in the permeability of the soil. Also, during a site evaluation proper setbacks must be maintained from any body of water, gullies, property lines, structures, and other septic systems. The total available space is evaluated at this time to ensure that there is enough space to install a second system (repair system). Click here for application.
What do I need to do to replace an existing mobile home or to add on to an existing home?
You will need to apply for a mobile home replacement/additions permit. After the application is submitted, we will conduct an existing system inspection to ensure that the structures will meet setbacks to both the septic system and well. A permit will be issued if the septic is functioning properly and the setbacks are met. After the Environmental Health permit is issued, you will then need to go to Person County Planning and Zoning to continue the permitting process. Click here for application.
My septic system is malfunctioning, and I need to have it repaired. What should I do? You will need to submit a site evaluation application at no charge. Upon receiving the completed application, an Environmental Health Specialist will conduct an evaluation and issue a repair permit. This allows you to have a septic contractor to repair your system.
