Environmental Health Septic Section

The On-site Wastewater Section of the Person County Environmental Health Department is charged with the responsibility of protecting groundwater quality and to prevent the spread of disease related to sewage effluent by enforcing the State On-site Sewage Disposal Rule in accordance with North Carolina General Statutes 130A-333-343, Article 11. These statutes include the explanation for making soil evaluations, for the issuance or denial of improvement permits, for authorization and circumstances for construction permits and for operation permits. The Environmental Health Specialists are responsible for issuing the aforementioned permits for both new and existing systems needing repair.
There has been a tremendous growth in population in Person County since the early nineties; therefore, increasing demands for sewage disposal permits.
Sewage disposal systems for migrant housing require an inspection and preoccupancy evaluation report. Since a state migrant housing law became effective in 1989, we have averaged about sixty-five requests for inspections each year from local farmers.
