Environmental Health Water Supply Section
The Person County Well Program is charged with ensuring that all private water supplies are properly protected and that potable water is being supplied to the owner. The Environmental Health Specialists in Person County enforce the Person County Well Ordinance in addition to the North Carolina rules and laws. To be a potable water supply, water must be free from contamination, free from objectionable tastes and odors, and must have acceptable chemical characteristics. The Ordinance specifies galvanized steel casing with a minimum weight of thirteen pounds per foot may be used; the Person County Well Ordinance requires that wells must be at least sixty feet from any on-site sewage disposal system and at least 10 feet from any property line. Citizens may request for the Environmental Health Specialists to take water samples to test water quality. These tests include bacteriological, inorganic chemical, petroleum, pesticide, and microbiological analysis and fluoride contaminants. Depending on test results, the specialist may offer recommendations to make the water supply potable. The fee schedule for water samples is listed below:
| Water Sample Type |
Fee |
| Bacteriological |
$50.00 |
| Chemical |
$40.00 |
| Nitrate |
$40.00 |

State law mandates local health departments to annually inspect migrant housing water supply and to make a preoccupancy evaluation report on each site. Also, any food service establishment, school, ballpark, and child care center that use water from private water supplies must be tested annually for the presence of bacteria.
The Person County Well Ordinance is currently undergoing evaluation in order to be updated and more consistent with new features added to the state’s regulations to further ensure water quality.
Frequently Asked Questions about Water Supplies How do I disinfect my well? Disinfection of Water Supply
How can I get my water tested? You will need to submit a request to our office instructing us on the type(s) of sample(s) you would like to have tested. The bacteriological test is conducted locally, and the results may be returned within 48 hours. The remaining tests generally take at least 2 weeks for results depending upon the type. These tests are submitted to the State Lab for testing. You will be contacted with the results by phone and letter.
I need to have a well drilled. What do I need to do? You will need to apply for a well permit. After the application is submitted, we will conduct a site visit to ensure that the well site will meet setbacks to structures, property lines, and the septic system. A permit will be issued after the Environmental Health specialist locates a site. You will then need to go to contact a well driller to drill your well. You must select a well driller that is certified in North Carolina. See the State list of certified drillers. Click here for the application.
Our public pool needs to be inspected, what do I do? All public pools must be inspected and permitted annually by Environmental Health. The application and a $100.00 annual fee must be submitted prior to inspection. Contact us for more information 336-597-1790. Click here for application.
