H1N1 Vaccinations to be Administered
Roxboro, NC-
On Monday, November 16, 2009, the Person County Health Department will administer H1N1 vaccinations from 8:00 am - 12pm and 1:00pm – 4:00 pm on a walk-in basis to the target groups as determined by the CDC. The Health Department is located in the Person County Human Services complex at 355-A South Madison Boulevard.
The target groups are:
• Pregnant women
• People who live with or care for infants younger than 6 months of age
• Health care and emergency medical personnel
• Anyone from 6 months of age through 24 years of age
• Anyone from 25 – 64 years of age with certain chronic medical conditions or a weakened immune system.
Both H1N1 injections and H1N1 flu mist are available.
• Nasal Spray (Mist). This is a live, attenuated intranasal vaccine. The vaccine virus is attenuated (weakened) so it will not cause illness. This type of H1N1 vaccine is not recommended for some groups of people.
• Shot. This is an inactivated vaccine (vaccine that has killed virus in it) that is injected into the muscle, like the annual flu shot.
Why aren't people 65 and older recommended to get early doses of 2009 H1N1 vaccine? There are two main reasons why people age 65 and older are not included in the groups recommended to get the initial doses of 2009 H1N1 vaccine:
1. People age 65 and older are least likely to get sick with this virus, and,
2. There will be limited amounts of vaccine available at first, so the first doses are recommended to go to those who are most likely to get infected and become very ill.
