Well Contamination Update
Vicinity of Halifax and Virgilina Roads
May 22, 2008
The EPA and the NC Division of Waste Management conducted extensive sampling of the affected area in February 2008. The sampling was done to determine the extent and potential source of the contaminants.
The results of the sampling are currently being compiled and analyzed and a comprehensive report is scheduled to be completed by June 30, 2008. Preliminary analysis of the results suggest that the concentrations of some contaminants have been significantly reduced from the levels originally measured in November and December of 2007. This reduction may be related to the considerable amount of rainfall received between the 2007 and 2008 sampling periods.
The homes which had carbon filters installed have been regularly monitored to insure that the filters are working properly. Some additional homes have continued to receive bottled if sample results indicated that the water was unsafe for consumption.
The Person County Health Department will continue to collect water samples throughout the next year in order to monitor changes in water quality. Homeowners and residents will be notified of the results. Should any of the results indicate a potential threat to public health, appropriate action will be taken.
The Division of Waste Management report will be posted under ‘Hot Topics’ on the Health Department web site: http://health.personcounty.net/PCHD/ . Please feel free to contact Person County Environmental Health if you nave any questions (336-597-1790).
